YH Magazine Meets Caleb Portfolio “Nothing has been done until you do it.” Caleb Portfolio, a 25 year old experimental black and white photographer and Hartford Art School alumni, lives by this creed once stated by the artist Duane Michals. Choosing to distance himself from traditional photographic rules and practices, Portfolio makes up his own rules as he goes along. MORE AFTER PHOTO.
His most recent series, Rewinds, was recently shown at Real Art Ways on 56 Arbor Street. The images in this series were created using a process in which Portfolio rewinds his film as it is being exposed.
Using a camera modification he made with the help of his mother’s old sewing machine, Portfolio is able to capture movement and expression in a unique fluid blur. MORE AFTER PHOTO
For Caleb Portfolio, a roll of film becomes a canvas all in itself. The content of his work often deals with personal emotional struggles and difficulties, which are captured and expressed using the nude human form in motion. The striking final images range from five to ten feet in length and have been shown in galleries in Hartford, New Haven and Providence.
